Judging & Prizes
The winner takes it all! The winning beer award will be presented at the 2022 Ballarat Beer Festival in front of thousands of beer lovers, with the beer then brewed commercially at Federation University. Two kegs will be purchased, one of which will be sold at The Mallow Hotel and the other at the 2022 Ballarat Beer festival.
Entrants will have their brewing mettle tested on the palates on one of Australia’s most discerning brewing experts, David Bean, Program Coordinator for Brewing at Federation University Australia.
All beers will be judged using the BJCP (Beer Judge Certification Program) Certification Guidelines.

Prize Fine Print
Winner will be able to brew at the University Brewery, on a date to be negotiated. For OHS issues, it may be necessary to do this mid-week.
The Uni Brewery will provide common raw materials such as malt, hops, water, yeast and cleaning agents (subject to availability of each).
Homebrewer will need to provide any specialty ingredients (e.g. imported malts, herbs & spices, fruit, honey, etc). Homebrewer must be aware that some modifications to method / recipe may be required depending on available equipment in brewery.
As the brewery is a licensed facility, excise tax and GST must be paid on any beer removed from premises.
Two kegs of the winning beer will be purchased, one of which will be sold at The Mallow Hotel and the other at the 2020 Ballarat Beer festival.
Competition rules
All entries must be brewed by the entrant. Where multiple brewers are responsible for a beer then all brewers’ names must be listed on the Entry Form.
Open to Ballarat regional residents only
The Entry Fee is $10 per entry to be paid when dropping off the beers.
Each entry must be 1 x 750ml bottle or 2 x 330/375ml bottles, with official entry label firmly attached with elastic band or tape.
Bottles received without official labels may be ineligible for judging.
Online registration must be received no later than January 31 2022
The brewer cannot be selling his/her beer commercially.
The brew kit used to brew the beer cannot be used for commercial brewing.
Brewers may enter ONE BEER in EACH CATEGORY.
A beer may not be entered in more than one category.
All entries become the property of Ballarat Beer Festival Homebrew Summer Slam Competition.
By entering the Ballarat Beer Festival Homebrew Summer Slam Competition, entrants allow the use of entry and result details for such marketing and promotional purposes as deemed appropriate, including the right to use names and images of winners in publicity material.
Judges, Organisers, Stewards and other affiliated parties are NOT able to enter beers into the competition. Beers entered do not necessarily have to be brewed SPECIFICALLY FOR the Competition. Beers already brewed may be entered provided the beer fits the eligibility criteria.
